I get a message that my mailbox is 75% full.I suppose there will come a time when it will be full.Is deleting Sent messages or Deleted messages the best way to empty it or at least to reduce the percentage filled?

Delete all that you don't need to keep. Certainly if you've 'Deleted' a message you don't want it anyway so why leave it on the server?

Check junk/spam box and empty if not automatically emptied.

Would suggest that before you dispose of the mail, you do a quick check to see if anything is wanted or important.
Remember also, any emails just don't vanish, but are possibly stored by your ISP for future reference!.
