System restore not responding and wont shut down

Hi, tried to do a restore but got the not responding message, tried to close in task manager but became a loop and all I could do was turn off the power, no access to start menu. Tried reboot and safe mode both to no avail, it booted up OK but nothing worked apart from Email. Then tried "last known good configuration" which seemed to sort things until I tried to create a new restore point then everything froze got the outline of the restore window in center of screen filled white no text in it and nothing works and I cant close it back in a loop. Had to post this on another PC, any suggestions please, I am currently running my AV but this should have picked up on this anyway if that is the problem.

no answers anyone? I can recover from a backup on an external drive as a last resort but will lose some programs and not really the route I want to take.

I think that System Restore is corrupt, only way to get it back working but no restore points, is turn it off then back on. When starting PC try Pressing F8 again and do a selective startup you have the to press Y for Yes N for No on each item it will Hang most likely on the one that is the problem

Big trouble now, cant even access my backup software now, screen lights up as normal, mouse works but when I click nothing happens just the egg timer appears and that is it, never moves on.

Can you clarify that please Woodchip, when I press F8 I don`t see any "Y or N" commands just a list of options ie safe mode, enable boot logging,reboot etc.

Thanks, I can get get into safe mode but all I get is a black screen apart from the recycle box icon and Firefox & thunderbird none of which work

Hi, it is XP Pro but looking more sinister by the moment. I can boot it and see the screen as normal but as soon as I click on anything that`s the end of it, nothing else happens all I can do is switch off the power and have another go.

Repair XP

OPTION 1 - Repair XP by replacing corrupt files Type

sfc /scannow

in the run box, press enter and let system file checker find and replace missing / corrupt file in windows and explorer.This will take awhile to complete and you may be asked for the CD to be in the drive if windows is not preinstalled on the hard drive.

OPTION 2 - Repair XP by install over the top of existing system

  1. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.

  2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

  1. Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.

To setup Windows XP now and Repair Install , press ENTER.

DO NOT choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console).

  1. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.

  2. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair.

  3. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot.

Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears.

Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.
