how to sign adobe documents

I am completing some simple documents that were sent to me in adobe format.I have not purchased an adobe program.I can add text & all is fine accept I cannot add a personal signature that I have scanned from a word doc.Can anyone suggest a freeware program that will assist with this ? or am I not using the document correctly ? Thanks.
