.tmp video file

I recently downloaded a film via torrent, only to discover that the extension is .tmp. As far as I'm aware the file has downloaded in its entirety (800 Mb). The problem is that now I cannot open it. When I do try to open it using one of the various media players installed on my PC, I see a 30 second clip telling that says "You can't play this file. You need to download: FREE Nice Player Toolbar." I don't think this is a scam. After all, the file seems to have downloaded completely (and took ages to do so), and the Nice Player Toolbar seems a legit sort of freeware application.

Does anyone know of an alternative way of opening and /or converting this file to .avi format, and I don't really want to install the toolbar suggested.

Thanks to whoever can be bother replying.

A file ending in .tmp is a type of file that is used as a temporary solution. This most often occurs in the installation of a program. These temporary files will be created and stored until the program has completely installed all of its applications.

It appears that the download hasn't completed successfully.
