Vista seems to hang when installing updates

When I shut my laptop down I get the message "Please do not power off or unplug machine.Installing update 1 of 20" followed by two dots which move to the right, with about a two second gap between moves.Thinking it must be a big update I left the machine on but an hour later it is still there and the dots have stopped moving! The updates came about because I had to use the recovery option to format the drive and reinstall the OS.When switching on for the first time there were actually 81 updates, and 59 of them installed ok but the rest failed. Any suggestions as to what I can do - surely I need the updates installing if possible? Thanks in advance

You probably need to get SP1 installed first as this used to be a problem in the early days.
