HP PSC 1410 All in one printer, frozen up

My buddy's printer is frozen up, with a red light flashing. He tells me, on the phone, that the icon beside the light looks like a drop of water or oil. The display is showing an "E" .He claims plenty of ink and has had no paper jams. He is running Vista basic. Can anyone tell me what this means. Glen

This is the HP page for the Blinking Lights it could be that he has not shut the cartridge access door properly.
