No audio after reinstalling XP sp3

I did a clean install of XP sp3 on my daughters old Desktop. Not being tec savvy I did not consider backing up audio. Tried all manner of advice regards device drivers, still no sound.

Would there be any conflict if I install a new sound card?

Make and model of PC?

Any exclamation marks against sound drivers in device manager?

are speakers plugged in and powered?

do head phones work in the same socket?

Volume not muted and sound turned up to maximum?

I think that board has the C-Media AC97 Audio Device

SIW should tell you for sure if you install and run it, it will tell you all the equipment fitted in your PC
