Windows Media Icons - why?

Was given a laptop to look at this morning (W7). Most of the desktop icons were of the Windows Media design. Clicking on any programme - IE, chrome, System Restore etc just opened Media Player. Multiple pop ups saying 'WMP could not be opened.

Got rid of the problem by a system restore through Safe Mode with Command Prompt, but would like to know what the owner is lekely to have done to cause this.

It sounds as though the icon shortcuts have somehow all been pointed to the WMP.exe location.

You've fixed it anyway.
