10 year old laptop-dispose?fix?what should i do with it?

ive got a 10 yr old compac laptop,very slow,and hasnt been used for years.it now has WINDOWS CANT START,THE FILE IS MISSING,CORRUPT/WINDOWS/SYSTEM 32/CONFIG/SYSTEM REPAIR USING ORIG START UP CDROM...ive tried a recovery cd,and quick restore cd,but screen doesnt change.is it worth fixing?selling for spare parts...or how do i dispose of it??shame to just bin it!thanks for any suggestions.would prefer to get it running again,and give away,or sell for a small price!

If its XP you could do a XP repair, By first going into BIOS SEt CD as first boot device followed by Hard Drive, then Start with XP CD choose install. Allow Windows to check for any other Operating Systems if it finds XP it will let you repair it by clicking on what it found then press R

Repaired one last week with same problem, approx 10mins.

I booted wih a live linux CD and deleted the old system file from C:\windows\system32\config folder then copied the system file from c:\windows\repair folder to the C:\windows\system32\config folder.

other methods to try

Missing Or Corrupt Windows\System32\Conf\System File http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org/howdoirepairamissingor_cor1.htm

To fix the "windows\system32\config\system file is mising or corrupt" where Xp wont boot:

Boot from XXXP CD to Recovery Console and type:

cd system32\config ren system system.old ren system.alt systemalt.old copy c:\windows\repair\system copy c:\windows\repair\regback\system exit

remove the disk and it should reboot into windows.
