".............. and I will switch to Echo"
Ah, the Echo action was suggested if in the future you wanted to use SyncToy for backup purposes. In that mode changes on the right (memory stick) are not copied over to the left.
For what you currently want to achieve, the Synchronize action is the one to use but just note my warning from earlier.

OK Thanks Secret-Squirrel Point taken. I do make a copy of my docs on another stick each week but I understand what you are saying and will act accordingly gel

Not using Sync Toy I cannot comment on it,But I use Goodsync and I have settings that allow me to either sync left to right or right to left or if I choose both ways, So I would check setting to see if these sync options are available to Sync Toy.

"can I make additions to the the memory stick when used on my laptop and then synchronize onto the documents on my desk top"
Providing that the SyncToy action is set to "Synchronize", then yes, all file and folder changes made to the right folder will be copied across to the left folder when you next run SyncToy.
One word of warning though when you use the "Synchronize" action for a folder pair - file and folder deletions on the right folder will also be mirrored to the left folder. So for example, if you delete (accidentally or otherwise) the My Documents folder on your memory stick and then run SyncToy you'll also wipe out the corresponding folder on your PC.
For backup purposes, it's usually safer to set the action to "Echo".
