Strange boot up

When I start my Windows Vista computer, the "my documents" page automatically opens, and my gadgets no longer appear. I've tried looking in the start menu but can't seem to change anything. I was recently infected with malware but thought I'd cleared it. Any ideas?

Could you try a system restore? Ask if you need more info.

Ctrl + Alt and press Delete, then the Windows Task Manager loads up,
File>New Task (Run...)
Type "Regedit"
then search through to:
HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Look for a string called "Shell" double click, then another dialog should open,
in the field "Value Data" type "Explorer.exe".
Close regedit at the top of the "windows task manager"
click shut down then choose Restart.
See if that works.
