Black screen and pointer at start up

I have a Dell Dimension running Windows Vista and it won't boot up properly. Windows tries to start but I end up with a black screen and the pointer but nothing else.
I've tried the Windows DVD that came with the PC but "Startup repair" doesn't work and "System Restore" fails.
I don't want to reinstall Vista as I'm afraid it will wipe the data on the HD and my last backup was some months ago.
Can anyone help please?

Try tapping F8 or F5 at start up to see if you can get into safe mode. How old is the computer and has it been loosing time or date.
Maybe set it to run with the hard drive as it starts up you have to go into the bios to check what the first boot is.

Just in case you can get into cmd in safe mode.

Best waiting for someone else to give you proper advice.
Google is full of people with the same problems and it looks a bit complicated for me.
