File extension converter not working

Running Microsoft XP with 4 users on PC. Having trouble opening files with the extension .docx. Have down loaded a converter from Microsoft, which works for 3 of the users. Have been into Control Panel/Folder options/File type but the option to change how all the files are opened is greyed out. Any thoughts please.

I know you will find this hard to believe but the fault has cleared itself. I have done nothing to the system. Logged in just to see if it was working and it was. Thanks for your help.
