Windows XP - Standby mode.

For some reason, neither Standby, nor Hibernate mode, no longer function automatically from Settings - Control Panel - Power Options. Is there some resetting I have to do here? A brief search suggests it could be a BIOS fault, which is a bit beyond me. Any advice appreciated, thank you.
