mkv file extensions problems with windows

The windows player programme does not play files with am .mkv extension any help would be appreciated derek

VLC media player will play them for you

I'll second that, VLC media player (free and plays just about everything, you can even record parts of whatever you are playing, very useful if you just want a separate copy of particular scene)
