Try a different USB port and see if it works there...

A 'new' driver won't work, you'll have to buy a new card reader that can read SDHC if there is no Firmware Update available for your SD reader on your pc manufacturers website.

Most people buy an inexpensive SanDisk SDHC card reader that connects to computer's USB port.

Yes the reader will be too old for HC cards

Plenty of cheap readers around that will plug into USB port for the new cards actually got one free when I recently bought a new laptop battery.

e.g. here

The HC cards / readers have extra pins so a driver update will NOT do anything to allow you to read HC cards on an old reader. you will either have to stick with the USB one or replace the one in the machine if possible

I have an old Medion PC with built in card reader that is part of the facia and therefore not replaceable. I just use the card reader that's built into the printer.
