HP Desk Jet 3820 Inkjet Printer

This printer has not been used for a while. whilst trying to print, I inserted a new Hp genuine black cartridge but this isn't recognised and the teardrop orange light just keeps on flashing. Nothing has worked so far. Anyone out there know how to fix this without binning the item. Thanks
