Airplane mode is a mode that your phone can go into in order to cut all communications and radio signals propagated by the phone. Due to it being illegal to use mobile phones during a flight, it's a way of getting around this restriction. If you want to listen to music / watch videos, during a flight, airplane mode allows cell phone users to circumvent the ban ensuring that their phones are safe to use during a flight ;
