try tapping F8 or F6 as the computer starts to see if it will show in safe mode.
If not plug it into an external monitor or TV and see if it works on that.
If so your back light has probably gone.

seems strange tho as it was working fine this morning, turned it off the normal way and now its like this. can the back lights just go like that? the laptop is not that old, a couple of years maybe.

Can you see any faint signal or script if you look at the screen closely. If so probably the back light.
Maybe try with the battery removed then unplug mains connection from the laptop and hold the start button down for 40 seconds. Then reconnect and try starting it again.
That removes the static which may or may not help.

Yes back lights and inverters can fail just like that.
try connecting to your TV as a monitor don't forget you wil need to press a key combination (Fn+ one of the F keys (blue square) usually) it may be worth cycling through these key options as it may be in external screen mode anyway.

Did you download anything this morning or connect a printer or anything like that.
I suppose you could try the bios to make sure it is connecting to the hard drive at start up.
Best waiting for advice from those that know about laptop problems .just trying to fill in till someone else can give you the advice that you need.
