Acer Recovery disk not working

My friend had a virus and formatted his Acer Computer which came to him with Windows 98 installed which he upgraded to XP. Format went fine but his D Drive is no longer showing. When he puts the recovery disk in the drive he gets a message Destination: hard disk0/partition 2. The files do not load. Can you hyelp?

If he /she upgraded to XP I suggest they just do a clean install XP and then download the relevant drivers from the acer support site , forget the recovery disk as its probably Win98 anyway.

He did upgrade but was given the option to save the recovery disk - he has formatted since the upgrade and had no problem using the disk - could this be anything to do with the virus. He is not at all computer literate and is not able to work out what drivers he needs.

What is he using to format the drive? It looks like he has lost the patition.
