I shut down my pc (windows xp sp2) in error by using the button on my pc. since then the pc will not boot past the point where the dots pass across the centre of the screen. At this point after a few seconds the pc goes into a loop and boots up tp the same point again.
It will not bbot up in safe mode but I get a message aabout system 32 error. Someone told me that this is due to missing drivers that has been caused by a virus and that the virus kicked in because of the incorrect closure. But I have been using Kaspersky Intrnet decurity and this has never shown that there was a virus.
I have the system xp disc and have tried the repair but this does not work.
Can anyone help please?

Try System Restore using the Command prompt follow these steps:
Restart your computer, and then press and hold F8 during the initial startup to start your computer in safe mode with a Command prompt.
Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode with a Command prompt option.
If you are prompted to select an operating system, use the arrow keys to select the appropriate operating system for your computer, and then press ENTER.
Log on as an administrator or with an account that has administrator credentials.
At the command prompt, type %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe and then press ENTER.
Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to restore your computer to a functional state. Hopefully there will be a date you can go back to.
Also read this info and try Last Known Good Configuration from the F8 menu

its probably a corrupt driver, especially if it will start in safemode.
However if the above posts don't help a repair install may be required.
Repair XP by install over the top of existing system
Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.
When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on your computer:
To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.
To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.
- Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.
To setup Windows XP now and Repair Install , press ENTER.
DO NOT choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console).
Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.
Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair.
Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot.
Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears.
Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.
