Numbered headings in MS Word

I am trying to use numbered headings in Microsoft Word, but can't achieve what I want.

I want my document to have headings numbered as follows (without the bullets, which are here just to get line breaks in the forum!):

  • Chapter 1: Title of Chapter
  • 1.1 Subheading Level 1
  • 1.1.1 Subheading Level 2
  • 1.1.1.1 Subheading Level 3

However, Word insists on having a number for every level, so I can't user "Chapter 1" instead of just "1". In other words, Word wants me to do it as follows:

  • 1 Title of Chapter
  • 1.1 Subheading Level 1
  • 1.1.1 Subheading Level 2
  • 1.1.1.1 Subheading Level 3

Can anyone advise how to achieve what I want here?

I don't think that it possible to do what you want. Numbering is for paragraphs and sub-paragraphs, etc. Why don't you type Chapter 1, etc and use the normal numbering after that. You can start with 1.1.
