unwanted icon

An icon has appeared on my desktop titled just "Desktop". Its contents are "[.ShellClassInfo] LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21769 IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-183"

If I try to delete it a warning appears saying Windows may not run properly if I do delete it. Anyone any idea what it's for or whence it came?

First line of defense -Try a System Restore back to before it appeared.

If that doesn't work then something else to try

Remove icon

Thanks both. Trouble with the System Restore is I can't recall when it appeared! The Fixit solution isn't for W7 - I forgot to say which version I'm using, sorry about that. I think I'll set a Restore point, then delete the icon & see what happens - one needs to live dangerously sometimes!

Sounds good to me.

They appear on the desktop because you have unwittingly changed your settings to Show Protected Operating System Files.

Rather than delete them I would try and hide them again as follows

Hide Protected Files
