Trying to re-install Win XP - my laptop is now stuck at 'setup is being restarted' and will do nothi

I tried to reload Windows XP from the disk - It stopped at 39 mins remaining and now says "setup restarting" It then goes to a black screen with the cursor arrow in the middle and will do nothing more. I cannot access any commands to start it or stop it or cancel it. Searching Google I can see that this is not an uncommon problem yet so far I have found no answer.

Thanks for all the replies - I tried most of them without success and then - the XP disc started to load normally - I don't know why !! Now it is asking for the Service Pack 1 disk - I cannot find this on line but have downloaded SP2 but the file "asms" is required - I'll search google again and try to find it.

You do not need SP1 SP2 covers it. try starting with XP cd in drive let pc look for Operating System when it finds it click on it to select what it found then press R to repair

It may be that the CD is damaged, download and run Recovery toolbox for XP

http://download.cnet.com/CD-Recovery-Toolbox-Free/3000-2352_4-10646814.html

Copy the data files to a thumb drive and burn to a CD using an ISO burn program.

If the CD cannot copy corectly, you will need to borrow a copy off someone and use your own code to activate it.

In the past when I've had problems installing XP, there have been times where the actual CD has been the culprit, and in one case the DVD drive itself.
