Hello Is there a wireless specification for lap tops and printers etc What is it and how can I check my old lap top Thank you gel

All wireless devices conform to one or more of the standard protocols - 802.11b (11Mbps), 802.11g (54Mbps) or 802.11n (150/300Mbps). The higher rated hardware is backward compatible with earlier standards, although 802.11b is effectively obsolete now.
As you say it is an "old laptop" and if it does have a Wireless Network Adapter installed, it will most probably be 802.11g. If it doesn't have a WiFi adapter installed, you can simply plug a USB one in.
