DIY Dead Laptop Battery Test ?

I have the “ plugged in not charging “ problem on my 4 year old Medion MD96178 laptop.

The machine will run fine off the adapter.

Tried all the usual 'tricks' to solve the problem but without success. OK I know these batteries only have a lifespan of 3 to 4 years so …...

Does anyone know of a simple DIY test to confirm a 'dead' battery ?

To be brutally honest, batteries last usually on average 1 year before becoming seriously degraded to the point where a single charge doesnt last long - depending on usage of course.

However, your Plugged In Not Charging error is fixable in a very simple way. Do the following:

1) Plug in the laptop 2) Unclip your battery from the machine while the laptop is powered up on the desktop screen. 3) Go on the start menu, right click Computer and choose Manage, and confirm any UAC prompts that may appear. 4) When the Computer Management console appears, down the left side, choose Device Manager. 5) Double click the Batteries section to expand it. 6) Right click Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery and click Uninstall and confirm any prompts. 6) Right click anywhere in the screen and choose "Scan for Hardware Changes". 7) When the battery driver has finished re-installing, restart your laptop and re-insert the battery.

Your charging issue should now be resolved. I have had this issue numerous times - seems to be quite a common issue with Windows Vista and 7 laptops.

Tried that one too. I think that's more for a battery that lasts only a short time.

After the freeze and thaw I tried to charge battery, after a few hours it showed battery full ( changed from steady red light to blinking red light ) but when I tried to run laptop via battery it was dead :-(

Also tried the 'Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery' uninstall but again no joy.

In my view this problem is a bug not fixed by Microsoft in Vista.

Also having trouble finding new battery for my laptop Medion MD96178

Battery ref is 40018281 ( S UR 18650F F )
