missing printer icons in control panel

Hi, I'm rinning win xp, and every now and again when I come to print, I can't see my printer,and system says no printer installed. When I go to control panel and review printer installed its blank, if i try to add printer I get a box telling me "printer spooler service is not running".

Can anyone please advise.

PS have a HP printer installed connext via USB

Have you tried re-installing the drivers, or even seeing if the drivers have been updated?.

With HP you may find that HP support might recommend using another set of drivers from another model, if problems continue with the printer you have.

What model HP printer are you using, and having a problem with?.
