Transfer files

I am getting a new laptop is there any way I can transfer files & or programs from one laptop to the new one. A few years ago I had device that enable me to couple up the two laptops together transferring files

set up new laptop to router network and transfer across that way.

or connect both machines by a crossover cable

or

transfer using USB sticks

or

remove hdd from old machine and put in caddy and connect to new machine.
