game problem no disk space but it has over 30 GB free

hi, i recently purchased the left 4 dead game for pc it required me to install steam which i thought it did but after 5 attempts it comes up with an error message saying it didnt have enough disk space to install the game needs 6 GB to install i have 34.6GB free of 69.6 GB according to my computer is there anyway i can fix this

It would help if you posted a few details as to your operating system? What do you mean by attempted 5 times to install Steam? Why so many attempts?
I assume the message is appearing in Steam that you do not have enough space. But until you explain why it took 5 attempts to install Steam it is difficult to hazard a guess to your problem.

sorry, its an acer aspire 5735 running windows vista 3gb RAM 160 GB HDD
i have no idea really it just stopped working or did nothing until a message came up and told me that it wasnt working
i had to install steam to get left 4 dead to work.

I would totally un-install Steam as if it took you 5 attempts to get it installed in the first place would seem to indicate that something is amiss somewhere.
Yes I know you had to install Steam to play L4D, I have the game myself, but the 5 attempts at Steam installation are a puzzle.
But I see your Acer is a laptop you might want to have a look here to see if your PC can handle the game. Can You run It?

well the system is running very slow and has a few problems with it im currently using my new laptop so ill do that later on my other laptop but that could well be the problem.
