Each time PC is booted up, a warning, purportedly from microsoft, advises that due to changes in the PC hardware a product revalidation is required and must be performed within 3 days otherwise there will be a loss of service. A dialog box containing a YES or NO choice is provided. Is this a scam? There have been no modifications to the PC in the last 12 months

Would help if you could post the precise wording of the warning that you get.
But in the meantime, have a look at this, which might explain the situation: Windows XP requires a revalidation

Yes it does happen. The automated phone option (0800 number, so no charge) is straightforward if a bit long-winded.

Thanks for your answers. Sorry about the vagueness and it was "Activation" not "Validation" but it was a friends computer and I did not see the screen. I have since found info on the link below which may be of interest. http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/genuinewindowsxp/thread/618a52cb-65e5-408b-8bbc-53a80779a786/
