compaq presario v6500 will power but not boot

Following my last post I would like some more advice on this . Compaq presario v6500, will power up to logo screen where you go into the bios but wont go into the bios or anywhere. If you cut the power and do a restart straight away you get no display. Leave it a wile and the display is ok again. The unit was fine untill a fue days ago when it went to boot to windows, a blue screen of death appeared then the unit would power up and shut down again. it now powers up and stays up but wont go beyond the start up logo where you go into the bios. is this problem terminal or could it be the bios chip gone west? Ideas would be very helpful. thanks
