Windows 2000 will not update

Have just re installed windows 2000 on an old pc but updates will not work. Error 0x80072F8F Time and date are in error. They are not. and I have tried the other fixes suggested by microsoft and other sites but still the same error. Its got IE6 installed

Did you check the time and date in the Bios as well.

Check Services and make sure Windows updates is set to automatic and running.

You can download the W2000 SP4 exe from microsoft.com it's 129.2 MB big. (Probably best to burn to CD in case needed again in future) http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=4127 also see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/891861

thanks, will give it a go, going to try xp on it first but don't hold out much hope it's only a celleron 700.

Buteman has already given you the answer, incorrect BIOS time and date is almost always the answer to this problem. Download SP4 plus from memory there was also an SP4 roll up as well.

If you install XP without correcting BIOS then same problem again.

BIOS time and date are correct.

XP is working perfectly if a little slowly.

Have tried 2000 again on a separate HDD and still get the same problem, I'm a bit mystified to be honest.
