No browsing history in history column

When I click the 'history' box a 'Search history' box appears underneath but it seems to be unresponsive. How do I get the browsing history back, please? IE8, Vista, Laptop.

Not sure about IE 8 but in IE 9, Tools, Internet Options, there is a bux that you tick or untick to delete browsing history on exit. Maybe there is a similar option on IE 8. Also running CCleaner (as I do)in default mode clears browsing history. Others with IE8 may well be more helpful.
