Hi, My 5 year old XP laptop hangs on the blue 'Windows XP' screen and does exactly the same when i try to start in safe mode, also the same in 'Last Known Good Configuration'. I do have an OEM XP CD.
Please can i have some/any tips as to what to do?

Sorry, this site is not displaying things as i type them. I meant that i typed
cd system32\config
and this seemed fine but when i typed
ren system system.old
I got the message 'The system cannot find the file or directory specified'.

just carry on to the next line if it can't find system
(thats why it won't boot into windows)
ren system.alt systemalt.old (if not found just carry on)
copy c:\windows\repair\system copy (if not found then a system repair in order)
c:\windows\repair\regback\system (if not found then a system repair in order)
exit

Ok, thank you.
In the meantime i was able to connect the hd to my laptop and copy the files to a folder. Would you suggest i just went ahead and try the repair install now without following the steps you just posted?

If its still connected to the laptop look to see if it has the windows\repair folder
if you can do it this way it will save the repair and lengthy time redoing all the updates.
if not then couple back to other machine and do the repair

Ok, i tried the recovery console again:
I typed ren system.alt systemalt.old (not found)
I typed copy c:\windows\repair\system copy (1 file copied)
I typed c:\windows\repair\regback\system (not found)
I honestly don't know what to do next? :0(
