XP Laptop hangs on 'Windows XP' screen?

Hi, My 5 year old XP laptop hangs on the blue 'Windows XP' screen and does exactly the same when i try to start in safe mode, also the same in 'Last Known Good Configuration'. I do have an OEM XP CD.

Please can i have some/any tips as to what to do?

Just to clarify, i should choose 'R' and got to Recovery console?? This wont delete data?

I typed in cd system32\config ren system system.old ren system.alt systemalt.old copy c:\windows\repair\system copy c:\windows\repair\regback\system exit

and i get the message 'The parameter is not valid'?

Ok, just to clarify: I am now in the recovery console but it appears not to accept the the command that Fruit bat gave me.

Do i now take the hd out and plu it into my laptop to copy the product key? Or do i go ahead with the repair install as a link Lotvic gave me stated that you dont need the product ket to perform a repair install?

cd system32\config Fine ren system system.old and got the message 'The system cannot find the file or directory specified'.

Grrrrr!

What now, please? Lotvic's way of connecting the hd to my laptop?
