connecting new hd monitor to pc

I have just bought a new monitor and it only seems to connect by avg.As it can be connected digitaly I have tried without success to connect with a dvi-hdmi cable from my pc to the monitor.can someone tell me what I need to do to achieve this.My graphics card is a nvidea 8600gt.

Looks like a common problem nvidia forum

Try removing nvidia drivers and booting with windows drivers.
