How long must this go on?

Newbies come on this site and have not got a clue as how to post a link. Case in point. Not that I am blaming the thread starter as even long serving members have problems so we can hardly blame the newly registered.

Most times an upgrade is invariably an improvement but with PC Advisor it was mainly a massive backward step. What on earth was wrong with the simple but effective Click here that we used to enjoy?

But is not just posting a link, adding a list is a nuisance or giving someone personal help by contacting them via a personal message, the icon is there but not the ability.

I come here to see if I can be of some small help but sometimes it is hard work in posting a neat and well laid out answer, particularly when it includes a list and links.

Rant over.

Teery Brown Even with smartphones I do not see how they could be faster than it WAS on this forum.

Back in the old days there were quick responses, as I said - it was almost conversational

I must agree that it was a retrograde step.

I still visit often but post rarely.

I can remember a time, maybe 5 years ago, when the posting rate was incredibly high and I recall getting into difficulty trying to deal with too many threads at once.

There seem to be very few threads on Excel. Is everybody now an expert on Excel or have the thread starters moved to the Excel specialist forums?

Add to that the slowness of the site, trying to open a thread or post an answer is atrocious at the moment.

No wonder we are seeing little or no action in the forums for hours on end.

I must admit that I find the site incredibly easy to use, and I'm quite surprised to see how much people actually struggle to use it (but the fact is they do, and that's all that matters!).

I think the aim of the developers was to make it similar to use as Word. i.e. if you want to make some text italic then you simply write it, highlight it then click the I symbol, or similarly with Bold or hyperlinks. I guess what some people are doing is pressing the buttons, then writing the text, then pressing the button again. In PCA's defence the preview box shows you exactly what the final result will look like so again I'm surprised at how much people struggle.

I think one change that would definitely make a big improvement and keep others happy at the same time would be for the site to automatically convert links to click here's if they were not formatted in the proper way, but then allow people that do wish to use the hyperlink tool to still use it as I like the ability of linking to somewhere with my own custom text such as 'search with Google'. Even just changing the default text from "Enter Link Description" to 'Click Here' would look better.

Just posted my first thread.

No problems with thread name, posting hyperlink, changing hyperlink name and giving a green resolve tick.

I imagine that bold is easy to.

What preview box?

If you use browser accessibility options it is one of the things which disappears.

There are a number of features like this and the new site can certainly not be described as disabled friendly.

I could be wrong, but I have found that the preview box might show what you have perhaps typed, but it doesn't necessarily mean that it comes out like that when published!.

Pine Man

In fact it seems to be running perfectly to me

I am glad to here it.

But posting a hyper link if you are new to this site is not straightforward. You cannot add a list simply or edit or contact another member.

i myself do not have problems with the adds but that is because I run an excellent adblocker which really defeats the object of an ad in the first place. I do not have problems with ads just the intrusive type which people have been complaining about for many years.

But my main point was not about ads but the lack of simplicity from a PC magazine forum that wants to help the less knowledgeable.
