Disappearing emails

I use windows mail with VISTA. Once I had opened an email and then moved on the next one the first one disappeared. Couldn't find the answer on forum then I found that a "View Applied" option had been ticked in the tool bar hiding emails that had been read. Once I reverted to "show all" the emails returned. Easy when one knows how! How do I pass on this information?
