XP Start Menu won't close !

Annoying problem that started for no obvious reason last week !

Whenever I click START and launch a program, the program launches fine but the start menu stays locked open and on top and won't close until I close the program. I can launch programs from the desktop okay but not from the start menu.

Have run various malware programs, registry cleaners, etc and all is clean and the problem remains.

Any ideas ?

Does pressing the Esc button remove it.

I suppose a system restore to when it was working Ok might fix it.
