Gaming - Sound error when playing PC games - With video

Hi,

I have been playing Diablo 2 this week which has worked fine until today when I have started receiving an odd stalling sound error. The PC makes a strange noise and the video freezes for a mili-second. I cannot describe it too well so have uploaded a video that I took on my Iphone4s to show you exactly what I mean.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKm0jLHZTk0&feature=youtu.be

I think it may be a sound card problem as have tested on three different graphics card and the problem does not resolve itself. It is worth noting that I had this problem about 3 months ago but it cleared itself up without me actually doing anything.

My PC Spec: MS Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1 Intel Core i3 CPU 530 @ 2.93 GHz 8.0GB RAM ATI Radeon HD6700 Series 8 USB Ports.

I just updated all my out of date drivers too fyi!

Otherwise my game and PC seems to work fine.

Any help will be much appreciated! :)

Kind regards,

Do you have on-board sound or a dedicated sound card?

How do i find out? It looks as though I have a card but am not certain.

At the back of your PC there will be a rectangular box, towards the top, where all the cables for your mouse, keyboard, ethernet cable and possible the green and pink cables from your speakers go. If they are there you are using on-board sound.if on the other hand go you have a lot of small sockets further down the back of the PC and your speaker cables are plugged in there then you have a PCI sound card.

Sound cards look something like this. Sound card. and fit in a slot in the motherboard. On board sound comes from the pink green etc ports seen here. On-board sound.

But is you let me know the make and model of your PC then I'll be able to have look and tell you.

Hi Chronus and thanks for your help!

I have had a look inside the PC and can confirm that I have on-board sound.

Since my original post my mouse has started freezing when moving it around the screen in windows and i've received the dreaded blue screen of death a few times. Only when not playing a game.

I'm thinking that my options are to buy another motherboard and install that myself or take it to a shop and have them sort it completely. However, I am not sure even if my diagnosis that the motherboard is faulty is correct, but I do not see what else it can be?

Thanks again,

Richard

You could try either a repair install of Windows or if you have a recovery partition then use that,or course you need to make sure you have backed up your files and unfortunately you will need to reinstall your programs and games again.

You have not said what make/model of PC you have and how long you have had it. I think it is a bit early to jump to the conclusion that your motherboard is at fault also taking it to a shop is going to cost you an arm and a leg.

My PC Specification: MS Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1 Intel Core i3 CPU 530 @ 2.93 GHz 8.0GB RAM ATI Radeon HDcannot remember Series 8 USB Ports

Some friends have advised me to try disable the on-board sound in the bios and testing to see if that helps.

Someone else suggested it may be a broken PSU or faulty RAM that may need replacing?

Obviously I will try reinstalling windows and formatting the PC first. Will I need to reinstall all the drivers if I do this? I'm not particularly good at doing this sort of thing. Manufacturers websites are often difficult to navigate and understand.

Windows 7 is pretty good at finding drivers but I sure we can find any that you are missing.Download and install this before you wipe the hard-drive.SIW The free version is fine after you have installed, run it and look on the left hand side under hardware you will see a list of your components. Click on motherboard and take a note of manufacturer and model, same with the video heading.

By the way if you disable on-board sound you will have no sound.I doubt very much if it is either a PSU problem or a RAM problem, cannot imagine how either of those would cause your sound problems.

Did someone build this for you if not what is the make and model of the PC, knowing that will make it easier if I need to check anything.

Good evening,

I've gone into the bios and turned off the sound. Everything seems to be fine now, except for that my sound is completely off. But the stalling and mouse freezing has ended. Which is a good thing. It's hard to test that the problem is completely fixed though without sound obviously!

As the PC uses on board sound how do I get the sound working again? Buy a sound card and use that to play sound through?

I am not sure how to find the make and model of my PC. A company called PC Specialist built it in Sept 2010.

Actually, upon further testing the PC still seems to be freezing somewhat :( turning the sound off has not resolved the issue completely... It's hard to test without sound as the sound was the main indicator of the fault.
