when my computer attempts to update windows this error appears: Windows update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. can anyone help me?

Go to Services scroll down to Windows update and make sure it is set to automatic and running.

A bit more detail on where to go to find Services, Services-start/disable. Scroll down for Windows update and check that it is set to automatic.

Something else to try. Restart Windows update.
