Windows 7 won't allow me to open my photos is says ,Windows photo viewer can't open this picture because you don't have correct permissions to access the file location' The photos are on a portable hard drive to which I transferred them when I changed from Windows XP to Windows 7.

If you are simply not able to access your files then take the following steps to Take Ownership of a file or folder:

  1. Right-click the file or folder for which you want to set permissions, click Properties, and then click the Security tab.

  2. Click Advanced to open the Advanced Security Settings for dialog box.

  3. Click Owner tab, click Edit. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue.

  4. In the new Advanced Security Settings for box, in the Change owner to: field, select your User name, and Check the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects. Click OK, repeat for remaining boxes. (If your User name is not listed click the Other users or groups button to add your account).

  5. Open the file or folder you wish to access.

Chronus,

Thanks for your reply, I tried all the steps you suggested but I still get the message about permissions. The photos were made on a Win XP computer and transferred to my portable hard drive with the intention of transferring them to Win 7 --- co far no luck !!

Rather than open them, copy and paste the whole lot into your MY Pictures folder then use Picasa to view them.
