Deleted emails disappear completely

I am running Windows Mail on Vista Home Premium. If I delete unread emails from the inbox, they go to deleted emails folder, however, any email that I have read and then wish to delete, disappears completely. This started to happen a month or so ago and while it is not a major problem, it does mean that I have no record of email communications, that may be useful to refer to at some point in the future. I use automatic update but did not like Windows Live mail when it was introduced.
Any advice would be gratefully received.

Try this advice from Vista Forum
Windows Mail may not be deleting the messages, but hiding read messages instead. In Windows Mail, click on the mailbox folder that this is happening in, then click on View, Current View, and make sure Show all messages is selected.
