Server Busy

Both my laptop and my desktop have started cming up with a box heade Server Busy on startup/ I am offered the choce of switching to or retrying. Neither do anything, The computers work OK. After a time the box disappears. What is it ? Does it Matter ? How do I get rid of it ?

If it happens when you start your computer have a look at what's being run at start-up with msconfig or Autoruns. It could be some sort of software update or malware etc. Type ' msconfig ' into the Start search box. You can disable an entry by clearing relevant box. Autoruns shows the same information but with much more detail.

Also it sounds like you have an installed program configured to access the internet and perform an operation, such as check for updates for that program. The 'server busy' message is appearing because the program is trying to access the internet before the connection is completely ready.

The usual suspects, in no particular order, would be:

AntiVirus program.

iPod or iTunes.

Sun Java Updater.

Any other program that has program update options.

If you find one that meets this description, configure the program to update sometime other than when the computer first starts.
