secure email alternative to gmail

Anyone know of a free alternative to gmail, I am currently re doing all my emails and was not happy about something on the news about google a while back (basically made them sound like they are open to sharing your info)

whats the thoughts on gmx mail and zoho mail ??

the email neesd to be compatible with thunderbird, safe , secure and good for spam avoidance as the main account will be used for banking and shopping.

You could try Yahoo email, which is free.
