Gaming PC - What a beginner should buy???

Hi, I have always been a gamer (Xbox, Playstation etc) and always used PC's (at work of sufing the net) but am now looking at going into PC gaming.

There seems to be alot of choice out there and I have no clue where to start or what standard of equipment I should be looking to get.

I have seen good and bad reviews for the main brands like Alienware but are they over priced?

If any one has any good advice for a newbie I would really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.
