The hard drive on my lap top is almost full but when I check my documents it amounts to about 300GB of data but when I look at the individual folders it amounts to only 137Gb of data
Does anyone have any hints and tips on how to find out why there is more data than I can find

Assume you have defragmented your hard drive ? If not try http://www.piriform.com/defraggler/download/standard
When you say “documents” have you taken into account your operating system and other software ?
