DESKTOP ICONS

My O/S is XP Prof'.When I try to re-locate an Icon on my Desktop by clicking and dragging,the Icon simply replicates itself,the new one moving to wherever I drag it,leaving the original Icon in place.Would be grateful for any advice. With thanks.
