IE 9 installs then fails

Many months ago I posted a problem about IE 8 installing but then failing to function. Several kind forum users sent helpful, but ultimately unsuccessful suggestions, so I gave up and stayed with IE 7. Several times this year I have installed IE 9, and guess what? It installs, but on clicking the short-cut I am told that IE 9 has failed. As before, I uninstalled each time and resumed using IE 7. Should I wait for Windows 8 and IE10?

Sorry, Woolwell, I should have said: I have Vista Home Premium (apart from IE9 this has been kept up to date). Some of the suggestions posted by rdave13 look worth investigating, though at least one seems to suggest it won't work with my OS. Thanks to both of you: I'll keep trying.
