CD/DVD Drive Not Showing Up

Hi All,
I am having nothing but problems with my Desktop not showing up either of my drives, I originally tried the regedit fix and removed the upperclass and lowerclass entry, after which did not fix the issue so I done a full reinstall of win7 (huge headache, since it sometimes did not recognise the drive)
After a nice clean install things were going great (all software I use back on, along with the million and one win updates) and just like magic the problem is back.
This time there is no upper or lowerclass files.
Someone please help me?

What type of CD drives IDE or SATA?
Check cables are tight (had problems with intermittent freezing until I renewed my SATA data cables)
Check device manager - properties - power management tab - untick "allow computer to switch off..."
